It's been a helluva few days for pickleball pro Andrei Daescu.

Two days ago, The Dink reported on exclusive details behind Andrei Daescu's $50k fine and suspension for illegal substance on a paddle.

And the rest of the pickleball world reacted to the news of this unheard-of fine and suspension.

Thursday, the big man spoke for the first time, saying on X:

I am pained by the recent events. This was an unfortunate mishap. I would NEVER cheat.

There was no intent to use the paddle in question during competition; it was mistakenly submitted for testing. The paddle has never been used in competition.

"I will abide by their decision"

For better or worse, Andrei has never wavered in accepting his punishment. Even if some wondered whether the punishment actually fits the crime.

After all, this is unprecedented territory in the world of pro pickleball. And clearly, the UPA felt the need to nip any future issues like this in the bud, stating:

There is no place in pickleball for those who cannot or will not play by the rules. For pickleball to continue to establish itself as a legitimate sport, there must be world class standards and organizations to enforce them. UPA continues to work hard to ensure pickleball rules and regulations are in place and adhered to by players, manufacturers, and all participants who impact the game. – United Pickleball Association

As Andrei sits out over the next 60 days, it seems this story will come to a close for now. It will be interesting to see the reaction if something like this happens again in the future and if the fine and suspension will be similar or more severe.
