Fiberglass vs Graphite vs Carbon Fiber

Pickleball paddle faces typically come in three materials: fiberglass, graphite, and carbon fiber.

Fiberglass is a lower-quality material in terms of performance. The hard surface with fast deflection makes it a popular choice for power paddles, but it may not be the best choice for most players, especially beginners. This is because beginners should be using a softer paddle while they learn and develop their strokes. A soft paddle can provide many benefits to a player’s game, including helping with touch and short game, allowing for better control and precision, and you can still generate enough power to put the ball away, if you have good technique. Note: whether a paddle is “soft” or “hard” is mostly determined by the thickness, however the paddle face also has an effect.

Graphite is a softer material and is, in my opinion, better than fiberglass, but worse than carbon fiber. Again, softer paddles are good for your short/soft game. Graphite is also a less expensive material than carbon fiber, but it may be less durable than carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber is the clear winner in my opinion. Especially since it’s possible to get raw carbon fiber paddles for around $100 from companies like Bison and Ronbus. Carbon fiber paddles are lightweight, durable, and soft, making them a popular choice for many players. They provide excellent touch and control, making it easier to maneuver and control the paddle. Additionally, carbon fiber is incredibly durable, so you can expect your paddle to last longer than a paddle made from fiberglass or graphite. Raw carbon fiber paddles also typically “grab” the ball pretty well and generate more spin than graphite or fiberglass paddles. This can be a real advantage for players who like to add spin to their shots. To conclude, it’s hard to go wrong with a raw carbon fiber paddle right now, as they’re an excellent choice for beginners and pros, alike.
