You know, it's hard to find anything unique in the pickleball world these days. Everyone is making cookie-cutter pickleball paddles, often just buying them off the shelf from China. I always look for paddles that stand out, showing signs of thoughtful engineering and effort. It's my pleasure to introduce the Sword and Shield Honolulu Pickleball Company paddles. Although I don't have all the models, I think you'll want to hear about these unique paddles. Stay tuned for my detailed paddle review. The first thing I noticed about these paddles was their distinct design. They have a throat hole similar to the Selkirk Circa, but also feature beveled edges, making them look tough and unique. Another innovative feature is the center grommet that can be removed, altering the paddle's weight and balance. This grommet acts as a weight dampener, reducing vibration and stabilizing the paddle, making it feel more head-heavy with the grommet in and more head-neutral without it. With the grommet in, the paddle has a swing weight of 128 and a twist weight of 6.14. Without the grommet, the swing weight drops to 124 and the twist weight to 5.92. This adjustability is a standout feature, allowing players to tailor their paddle based on their play style. I found the paddles performed well both with and without the grommet, depending on whether I was playing defensively or offensively. The paddles also have a long handle, ranging from 5.5 to 6 inches, providing a comfortable grip for two-handed backhands. The 4.125-inch handle circumference is suitable for both men and women, offering excellent maneuverability. The paddle line includes models like the J1, J1H, J3, and J5, with additional J2 and J2K models. Each model has its unique features, such as different materials and technologies. For example, the J3 has a 6-inch handle and is very stable with a low swing weight of 111. It features T carbon fiber, as do the J1 and J2, while the J2K uses Kevlar. These paddles are all thermoform unibody and edge-foamed, with a throat hole they call power flex technology. They come in three colorways: black, gray, and white-black. The proprietary raw composite face on the J5 and J1H models significantly increases spin, with spin rates over 2,000 RPMs, placing them in the top percentile for spin performance. These paddles are aesthetically pleasing, well-engineered, and made from high-quality materials. When reviewing paddles, I start with serves and serve returns. The J5 paddle's extra length helps control serves, allowing deep shots with great accuracy. These paddles offer medium power, excellent control, and impressive spin, thanks to the throat hole and lack of vibration. Drop shots and resets are crucial in pickleball. These paddles excel in this area, offering soft touch and control, making it easy to execute defensive shots and get to the kitchen for dink battles. The paddles perform exceptionally well in dink battles, with a live spot extending to the edges, ensuring consistent power and control. Although these paddles are not in the power category, they provide enough pop for offensive plays. Removing the grommet increases power slightly, making them more versatile. Despite being control-oriented, they offer a balanced feel with minimal vibration, even with the grommet removed. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed playing with these paddles. They are a great addition to any player's bag, especially for those seeking control and versatility. They are also affordable, offering great value for the price.
