You don’t have to “get to the kitchen as quickly as possible.” Actually, that can hurt more than it helps. If you hit a good ball that gives you time to move forward, do that. But then, when your opponent goes to hit again, split step and prepare for the next shot. Repeat on your way into the kitchen. Long story short, forward progress is good.
