The Fifth Shot Matters Too: Why the Point Isn’t Over After the Third Shot

The third shot gets plenty of attention, and for good reason. But don’t forget: the point is often won or lost on the fifth shot.

Since most points are won at the Non-Volley Zone line, your goal after the third shot should be to work your way forward to the Kitchen line as quickly as possible. The key is doing so under control.

When you or your partner hit a quality third shot, take advantage of the opportunity and move forward aggressively. If the third shot is less effective, be more patient and prepare to hit a quality fifth shot from the transition zone.

Many players make the mistake of rushing to the kitchen and hitting while still moving, leading to unnecessary errors. Instead, move forward with balance, establish your position, and be ready to reset if needed.

Remember: a good third shot creates the opportunity. A good fifth shot often completes the journey to the Kitchen.
