"This is an important step in ensuring our equipment standards continue to support fair competition while allowing for responsible innovation."

On October 1, 2026, USA Pickleball will implement a new Spin Rate Test years in the making.

Rather than simply measuring a paddle's surface grit, new procedures will measure RPM based off a dual-camera system established by Sweden-based Image Systems.

The company's "precision pickleball paddle testing" system is called PaddleVision (rendered above). Here's how the website describes it:

High-speed dual-camera imaging with advanced motion analysis algorithms deliver precise measurements without manual complexity. Standards-compliant testing that accelerates your time to market and ensures manufacturing consistency.

USAP's new official spin threshold: 2,100 RPM.

"The implementation of the Spin Rate Test marks a new era in paddle certification and equipment evaluation. By partnering with industry-leading experts, we've developed a testing process that is objective, repeatable, and built for long-term sustainability," Riley Burgess, USAP's Vice President of Equipment Compliance, told The Dink.

"This is an important step in ensuring our equipment standards continue to support fair competition while allowing for responsible innovation."

The launch comes after a months-long open comment period between USAP and paddle manufacturers and will be reflected in their "USA Pickleball Equipment Standards Manual" going forward.

An email was circulated to paddle manufacturers today introducing the change.

Here's what else we know:

  • All certified paddles must be compliant to the standards of the period of time in which they were certified.
  • Paddles certified after the Oct 1st date must pass the Spin Rate Test with a value under 2100 RPM.
  • Paddles that are certified with this standard will appear on the approval list no earlier than Oct 1st, 2026.
  • If a paddle passes the current Surface Roughness and Coefficient of Friction tests, they can be added to the approval list immediately until Oct 1st, 2026.
  • The Spin Rate SOP will be distributed on 7/15.

How We Got Here

USA Pickleball has been the standard-bearer for amateur pickleball paddles since 2010, long before the sport we all love was the international sensation it is today.

As the sole equipment testing standard for recreational and amateur play – pro paddles are tested and certified by the United Pickleball Association of America (UPA-A) – the universally recognized "USA Pickleball Approved" seal has come to mean something.

Namely, paddles bearing its mark are compliant with a standard set of rules and conventions governing on-court performance.

USAP's commitment to this charge hasn't changed. But the paddle landscape around them has evolved immensely, especially within the last five years or so when COVID helped propel pickleball into the mainstream.

95% of These USAP-Approved Paddles Fail Its Own Surface Test

An independent test using USAP’s surface roughness methodology found that 40 out of 42 approved paddles exceed their own certification limits

Paddle technology has progressed at light-speed. In some cases, it's been difficult for wide-sweeping testing protocols to keep up.

  • Hundreds of brands are pushing out new models almost daily (the counterfeit industry is booming as a result).
  • Foam cores have fundamentally changed the way paddles feel and perform.
  • Performance limits are being pushed to the maximum: power, pop, spin, dwell, pocketing, etc.
  • Longer-lasting surface textures have introduced a new era of better, more "permanent" spin.

The Spin Rate Test is a big step for USAP toward more accurately measuring and enforcing spin in the amateur game.

How willingly will manufacturers embrace the new test? And how will this impact the amateur game going forward?

Time will tell. But we're be keeping a close eye on it.
