Why You’re Drilling Wrong (And How to Fix It)

Today I’m taking you on court for a real pro style drill session at Urban Pickleball in Austin! Instead of mindless reps, I’m taking a focused approach where every drill is built around pattern recognition and specific goals. I warm up at the kitchen with four targeted dink patterns, then I’m taking the tempo up with controlled counters, and finally I’m taking on the baseline with drive drop reps and mechanical tweaks. You’ll see exactly how I structure two hours so that every ball has purpose. Eli Trumeter joins me, and together we’re taking on a system where each of us chooses one skill to sharpen at the kitchen and one to sharpen at the baseline. I show how I chase 50 ball streaks without net errors, how I lean in to take more out of the air, how I decide between forehand and backhand counters, and how I adjust my drives for both whip and control. If you’re taking notes for your own sessions, this is a drill blueprint you can copy. ❗️Shop My Signature Paddle HERE: https://boundlesspickleball.com/products/munro ❕ProXR Site (10% Off): MUNRO10 https://proxrpickleball.com/discount/MUNRO10?redirect=%2Fcollections%2Fshopall 👐Hesacore Grips: CODE: JACK10 https://shop.hesacore.com/?ref=bwyegeqa 🧘Bodhi Pickleball (15% Off): CODE: MUNRO https://bodhipickleball.com/8902527 Newsletter Sign Up: https://jacksjournal.beehiiv.com/subscribe 🔗Social Links: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejackmunro TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thejackmunro Urban Pickleball: https://www.instagram.com/urbanpickleballatx?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Eli Trumeter: https://www.instagram.com/eli_trumeter_pickleball?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== 📸 My filming setup and equipment: Sony A7III Camera: https://amzn.to/3ZvC6lc Camera Tripod: https://amzn.to/3B56usN Phone Tripod: https://amzn.to/4e3WRce Chapters: 0:00 Game Plan And Why Pattern Locking Works 1:21 Kitchen Warmup With The 50 Rule 8:48 Counter Speed Progression And Targets 10:05 Forehand And Backhand Speed Up Patterns 12:00 Baseline Drives, Drive Drop Reps, And Final Push After the chapters: In this session I’m taking you through a full pickleball drill framework that you can run with a partner or coach on any court. I start at the kitchen with four specific patterns and the 50 ball rule that punishes net errors but allows play to continue on wider misses. By doing this, I’m taking my spacing, split steps, and recovery to the middle of the box to another level. I focus on leaning in on contact, taking more balls out of the air, and adding pressure without rushing into speed ups. Next I’m taking you through counter drills with clear intent. I feed directly to the body zone between hips and shoulders so I can build rhythm, then I push intensity from fifty percent to eighty percent to full speed. I talk through when I counter with forehand versus backhand, how I slide into position, and what tells I give away. After that, I’m taking on a focused kitchen drill where I build my forehand speed up options and Eli builds his backhand speed up. From there I’m taking the action to the baseline, testing my drive mechanics with arm straight versus arm bent, searching for more whip without losing control. Then I’m taking on the drive drop combo, simulating third and fifth shot sequences under pressure. The goal is to keep repeating until fatigue sets in, because that’s when mechanics need to hold strongest. If you’re serious about getting better, start taking your drill sessions beyond mindless reps. Pattern lock, chase streaks, set clear rules, and keep repeating until the movements feel automatic. Today I’m taking you through exactly how I do it, and you can too. Source: Jack Munro
