JW holds the paddle down around his waist, slightly favoring the backhand. Ready position should protect where your opponents can hit hardest at you. In JW’s case, his opponents hit speed ups an inch over the net at 50 miles per hour. Your opponents don’t hit as hard or as precisely, which is why your ready position should be higher than JW’s. It’s much easier to drop the paddle down than it is to raise the paddle up, and if you have to raise the paddle to hit, your chances of popping up the counterattack rise dramatically. I’m not saying JW’s ready position is wrong. I’m saying it’s built for the pro game, and it’s one of countless things that pros do that you shouldn’t copy. But here’s what actually makes JW’s hands so fast…look how relaxed he is. Relaxed muscles fire faster than tensed muscles. AKA, your hands are faster when your muscles are relaxed. So next time you’re on the court, try and bring your ready position just a little bit higher, keep your arms a little bit looser, and start winning hands battles. Source: Zane Navratil Pickleball
