Pickleball has skyrocketed in popularity, and for good reason. It’s fun, fast-paced, and social. While the game may seem simple, mastering doubles play requires smart strategy, teamwork, and precise execution. Whether you are a beginner looking to improve or an experienced player aiming to dominate, here are five key strategies to elevate your doubles game.
The drop shot is one of the most critical moments in any pickleball rally. Instead of smashing the ball, advanced players use a third (or fifth, seventh or ninth) shot drop to softly land the ball in the opponent’s kitchen (non-volley zone).
Forces opponents to hit upwards, reducing their attack power.
Allows your team to advance to the net, where most points are won.
Slows down aggressive opponents who rely on fast-paced play.

2. Control the Net with Smart Positioning
In doubles, the team that dominates the net usually wins the point. Both partners should work together to move up to the kitchen line as quickly as possible after the serve and return.
Gives you control of the point with quicker reaction time.
Forces opponents into defensive positions.
Allows you to execute fast volleys and put-away shots.

3. Communicate and Cover the Court Efficiently
Great doubles teams move as one unit, constantly communicating and anticipating each other’s moves. Poor teamwork leads to missed shots and open gaps on the court.
Reduces unforced errors caused by confusion.
Ensures court coverage against tricky shots like lobs and dinks.
Builds team chemistry, leading to better shot selection.

Dinking is a soft, controlled shot played just over the net into the opponent’s kitchen. A well-placed dink can force errors and create opportunities to attack.
Takes away your opponent’s ability to smash the ball.
Sets up high balls that you can put away.
Forces patience, making aggressive players uncomfortable.

5. Use the Lob Sparingly but Effectively
The lob is an often overlooked but strategic shot that can catch opponents off guard, especially if they are too close to the net. A well-placed lob can force them into a defensive backcourt position.
Pushes aggressive net players backward, disrupting their rhythm.
Can be used as a surprise shot to reset the point.
Exploits opponents who lack strong overhead smashes.
An offensive lob is better than a defensive lob.
